EUROPEAN LANDSCAPE 2023
Generation
Information based on provisional data as of January 2024
Renewable energy sources increased their presence in the generation mix.
In Europe, a firm commitment has been made in favour of energy from renewable sources with the aim of increasing energy independence and achieving long-term decarbonisation of the economy, leading to a share of renewable energy in total electricity generation in all ENTSO-E countries reaching 45.1 % of the total energy produced (39.3 % in 2022). The presence of renewable energy sources has increased by 11 % compared to the previous year. Solar and wind power have experienced the greatest growth in 2023 relative to the rest of the technologies, with a variation of 18.2 % compared to the previous year. In 2023, Spain was ranked twelfth in terms of generation coverage from renewable sources, ranking seventh in wind coverage and third in solar coverage, both calculated as a percentage of total electricity production.
