EUROPEAN LANDSCAPE 2025
Generation
Information based on provisional data as of January 2026
The presence of renewable energy sources in the generation mix decreases slightly.
Despite the slight decline in its share of the generation mix, Europe has continued its strong commitment to renewable energy, with the aim of increasing energy independence and achieving long-term decarbonisation of the economy. Across the ENTSO-E countries, the share of renewable energy in total electricity generation reached 47.9%, compared to 48.4% in 2024. When considering only renewable energy generation from European Union countries reporting data to the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform, this share falls to 44.6% in 2025, as countries with a high contribution of renewable energy generation, such as Norway and Switzerland, are excluded. Renewable energy generation decreased by 0.5% compared to the previous year. However, solar power was the renewable technology that experienced the strongest growth in 2025, with a variation of 17.3% compared to the previous year. In 2025, Spain once again ranked as the second country with the highest renewable generation from wind and solar sources, only behind Germany, which has a larger generation capacity of these technologies. In terms of installed renewable capacity, Germany continues to lead the ranking, followed by Spain. In Spain, the strong growth of solar technology stands out, having surpassed wind power for the first time by approximately 9 TW.
