The year 2021 has been a record year for photovoltaic solar power generation in Spain with an annual historical maximum of 20,954 GWh and a maximum coverage of 8.1%

2021 has once again been a record year for photovoltaic solar power generation in Spain, as it has set a new annual historical maximum, reaching 20,954 GWh, which means an increase over previous maximums by 36.9% compared to 2020, The participation of this technology in the mix also registers an all-time high, with a value of 8.1%.

In terms of photovoltaic solar power generation by autonomous community, Extremadura was the community that produced the most electricity in 2021 with 4,929 GWh, which represents 23.6% of all solar photovoltaic energy generated in Spain. It is closely followed by Andalusia (4,910 GWh), which until last year was in first position. Photovoltaic solar power was the second technology in the generation structure of Extremadura and Murcia, contributing, respectively, 21.7% and 20% of the electricity generation mix of their region.

The months of May to August are the ones that record the highest production of photovoltaic solar power generation nationwide; in May the maximum historical generation recorded in July 2020 was beaten, and it was exceeded again in the month of July, with a maximum generation of 2,616 MWh. Seasonality is an important factor in this technology and decisively conditions its generation throughout the year. In this way, from May to August generation presents a share of generation of around 11-12%, while it is reduced to almost a third in the months from November to February. The maximum coverage was registered in June, with 11.7%.

During this year 2021, the maximum daily photovoltaic solar power generation nationwide has been repeatedly exceeded, reaching a value of 92,316 MWh on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 (higher by 35.5% than the value registered on June 21, 2020 ). For its part, the maximum coverage occurred on June 6, 2021, with a 15%.

At the hourly level, the national photovoltaic solar power generation nationwide has also set new historical records, reaching a maximum generation of 9,583 MWh on Friday, May 14 between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., and on Sunday, June 6, between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. it registered the highest historical participation in the electricity generation structure with a value of 31.7%.

It is clear how the luminosity has an effect on the photovoltaic power generation, registering from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. coverage values around 20%, while from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. it is almost null.
