Balancing markets
Information based on provisional data as of January 2023
The balancing markets (secondary regulation, tertiary regulation, replacement reserve, and secondary control reserve avoided via the European platform for International Grid Control Cooperation, IGCC) have had total energy needs of 11,757 GWh. Of this total, 54.3 % corresponded to upward energy management and the remaining 45.7 % to downward energy management.
The largest energy needs were covered by tertiary and replacement reserves. It is worth highlighting the significant share of renewable generation in these services.
Evolution of energy requirements covered through energy balancing
On May 24, 2022, the new tertiary control service came into operation with two types of activations: scheduled and direct. Since its commissioning, almost all the activations of the tertiary control service have been scheduled (99.7 %), which is why aggregate data for both activations is included in this report for all the data corresponding to tertiary control allocations.
